CONTEXT
  • Sets daily, weekly and monthly ventilation management and occupational hygiene (incl. public health) routine schedules
  • Determines the need for, and assists in the development of ventilation management and occupational hygiene (incl. public health) procedures and standards
  • Promote health and ventilation awareness
  • Advises on changes to plans and schedules to minimise the effect of unexpected or unsafe work practices
  • Report occupational hygiene (incl. public health) & ventilation incidents and participate in investigations and follow-up actions.
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
The Occupational Hygiene Assistant is responsible for assisting the Occupational Hygienist in maintaining Occupational Hygiene and Ventilation systems and programmes and provides his / her immediate supervisor with information and to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.
In addition, this role is also responsible for occupational hygiene (incl. public health) and ventilation incident identification and investigation; assisting with ventilation impact assessments as required; assisting with sampling and interpretation of occupational hygiene exposure and ventilation data; and assisting with health and ventilation awareness and training.

Ensure that legal requirement, AAplc standard and policies are adhered to
  • Ensures adherence to legal compliance through monitoring and reporting
Conduct risk assessments, occupational hygiene (incl. public health) & ventilation measurements and participate in audits
  • Maintain an effective risk assessment programme
  • Maintain an effective occupational hygiene measurement programme
  • Participate in audits
  • Ensures follow up of risk assessments and audit findings, and the implementation of recommendations made
  • Ensure execution of investigations with report completion

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Matric
  • COM Intermediate Certificate in Mine Environmental Control
  • Certificate in Basic Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene measurements
Advantageous:
  • Registration with the South African Institute of Occupational Hygiene (SAIOH)
  • Studying towards an environmental health (occupational hygiene/public health) degree or diploma
EXPERIENCE
Experience of at least 2 year in the Mining and / or Refining environment of which Practical experience of at least 1 years in the Occupational Hygiene or ventilation management or health field.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
  • Code 08 Drivers License
  • Computer literacy in MS Office, SAP, and other specialised technical programs
  • SHE Risk Assessment
